Fiddler on the Roof is set in a Russian Jewish village around 1905. The story follows Tevye, a milkman, and his family: his wife, Golde, and their five daughters. The eldest three daughters all have secret romances: Tzeitel with Motel, a poor tailor and Tzeitel's childhood best friend.
